3。5/5 - While I enjoyed the first 75% of the book, I found the last quarter to be rushed and unsatisfying。 It was far too compressed - and much more “telling” than “showing” - to offer an adequate conclusion。 Unfortunately, this is true of the last several Scarpetta offerings。

I didn't just love this book。 I devoured it。 It was impossible to put down, and when I got to the last few minutes, my other half walked into the living room and got told I'm on the last three minutes of this book。 Do not speak to me! He then took it as a challenge by wittering his head off and making me laugh, which made those last minutes turn into 15 minutes and frustrated me no end until I could get some peace to finally finish it! OMG! Patricia Cornwall has done it again。 This novel is a Kay Scarpetta classic。 Weird shit, brutal murders, Russian spies, drones, bad ass helicopters, bad characters, Bigfoot(?), it’s all here。 The suspense had me on the edge of my seat。 The bad news? I’ve read it and there’s not another one waiting。 The good news? I loved, devoured this book! More, please!

Cornwell had gone off her rocker for a pretty good while。 I would read her latest book…。 I only like the Scarlett’s series…。 And find myself rolling my eyes or nodding off because the storyline was so far fetched。In Unnatural Death she does get back to her medical examiner roots and throws in some detective work along with her sidekicks, Marino, Lucy and Benton。She has some interesting people working in the morgue with her, too。She does use one of her tired tactics of bringing back someone from Cornwell had gone off her rocker for a pretty good while。 I would read her latest book…。 I only like the Scarlett’s series…。 And find myself rolling my eyes or nodding off because the storyline was so far fetched。In Unnatural Death she does get back to her medical examiner roots and throws in some detective work along with her sidekicks, Marino, Lucy and Benton。She has some interesting people working in the morgue with her, too。She does use one of her tired tactics of bringing back someone from the dead I had hoped was long gone and tries to weave it altogether and even so it was a bit of a reach, but she does form it into the story。She is living in Alexandria, VA and I appreciate that because it reminds me of her home in Richmond, which was quite near my own and I enjoyed the familiar streets and surroundings。I must say the whole Big Foot storyline having to do with Marino’s obsession could have been scrubbed。 It was really just a waste of reading time。Lucy is still obsessed with the Avatar of her dead wife Janet, which I find sick and twisted and hard to believe that no one has made her seek professional mental help to move on。But all in all I enjoyed the book。 It’s a good size book at over 400 pages and I read it over the weekend。 I got it from my public library pretty quickly。 I had to get the hardback because the Kindle version is not available yet and the print was a bit small on my old eyes。It is also an open ended book… meaning there has to be another one to follow or we are all just left hanging。I’m glad to see Cornwell is still capable of writing a decent book! 。。。more

3。5 starsAfter (in my view) a drop in quality for the Scarpetta series, the last couple have been back to old form and this is definitely a good read。 A couple of interesting strands, with elements that nudge towards science fiction; these scenarios are quite scary as they are probably also nudging closer to reality。 Our supporting cast of Merino, Lucy and Benton all make their welcome contributions。

Latest in the Scarpetta series, my attention was kept throughout。 Because I know the series, the relationships of the characters were easy to follow。 The story wove together new and past events and flowed nicely。

I have been a Kay Scarpetta fan and Patricia Cornwell fan from the beginning, and this book did not disappoint。 I love the continued storyline of all the same characters and how their lives have intertwined。

Patricia Cornwell's last few books have been excellent。 Her newest book, Unnatural Death, is no exception。 This is the 27th entry in the long running Scarpetta series。 While the book picks up from the last entry, this book can certainly be read as a stand alone。Kay Scarpetta is the Chief Medical Examiner for Virginia。 This time around, Kay is sent to the woods and to a deserted mine in North Virginia。 Two bodies have been found, as well as something very curious in a mine shaft。 Kay is not sure Patricia Cornwell's last few books have been excellent。 Her newest book, Unnatural Death, is no exception。 This is the 27th entry in the long running Scarpetta series。 While the book picks up from the last entry, this book can certainly be read as a stand alone。Kay Scarpetta is the Chief Medical Examiner for Virginia。 This time around, Kay is sent to the woods and to a deserted mine in North Virginia。 Two bodies have been found, as well as something very curious in a mine shaft。 Kay is not sure why the Feds have taken over the case and the autopsy, but she has no choice but to follow orders。The recurring characters all return in Unnatural Death。 Sidekick Pete Marino is always by Kay's side。 He hasn't changed much over the years and is one of my favorites。 Niece Lucy grows more and more enigmatic with every new book。 Kay's husband Benson has his own secrets。 Lesser characters are just as well drawn - and are very easy to be separated into 'good and bad'。 I applaud Kay's ability to hold her tongue - but her inner dialogue lets it all out。I was truly blown away by some of the technology being used by the Secret Service and other agencies。 Kay's methods and tools in the autopsy suite are just as technologic。 In the 'about the author' notes, Cornwell mentions that her interests include space-age technologies, threats to contemporary life, artificial intelligence and more。 Those interests are woven into the plot of Unnatural Death。 There's no way to predict where the plot is going to go。 There's lots of action, suspense and unexpected turns。 Cornwell held my attention right down the last pages。 A great entry that I quite enjoyed。 。。。more

I was disappointed with this novel, the most recent book in the Kay Scarpetta series。 A lot of the material felt rehashed and predictable。 It seemed like portions of the story and the ending were “phoned in” - “telling, not showing” writing。 I would still encourage others to read these books in order。

Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series has consistently been one of my preferred choices for crime fiction reading。 Her skillful integration of captivating mysteries, empathetic characters, and forensic science has kept the series relevant for decades。 Although Cornwell took a brief hiatus from Scarpetta, she reintroduced the character with a soft reboot in 2021。 Now, she returns with the 27th Scarpetta novel, Unnatural Death。 As a devoted fan of the series, I eagerly embraced the opportunity Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series has consistently been one of my preferred choices for crime fiction reading。 Her skillful integration of captivating mysteries, empathetic characters, and forensic science has kept the series relevant for decades。 Although Cornwell took a brief hiatus from Scarpetta, she reintroduced the character with a soft reboot in 2021。 Now, she returns with the 27th Scarpetta novel, Unnatural Death。 As a devoted fan of the series, I eagerly embraced the opportunity to receive a copy of the novel from Cornwell's publisher。 True to its predecessors, this latest installment retains all the familiar elements fans adore while introducing new twists bound to captivate even the most seasoned mystery enthusiasts。Kay Scarpetta faces an ongoing battle to maintain order in her role as Chief Medical Examiner for the state of Virginia。 Unanticipated challenges arise from the loyalists to her predecessor, who are determined to complicate her life。 The situation is exacerbated by severe budget cuts, making the procurement of basic supplies nearly impossible and pushing Kay to the edge。 The story unfolds as she boards a helicopter with her CIA niece, Lucy, bound for a remote location where two deaths have occurred, unleashing a myriad of questions and confusion。Upon arriving at the scene, two bodies are discovered—one male and one female。 The gruesome sight is not for the faint of heart, with the man's body appearing to have been torn apart before being discarded in an abandoned mine shaft。 At the same time, the woman's remains float in a nearby lake, becoming prey for the creatures inhabiting it。 The question looms: is this the work of a deranged killer, or have the creatures of the wilderness reclaimed their territory? As Kay grapples with this horrific scene, her longtime investigative partner, Marino, presents an even more perplexing discovery—a cast of a human-like footprint, seemingly too large for a man。 Convinced it proves the existence of the legendary sasquatch, Marino faces skepticism from everyone else at the scene。 Despite her doubts, Kay must utilize all her skills to unravel the mysteries of this unsettling sight。The 27th book in the series introduces readers to another perplexing mystery。 The narrative takes a while to gain momentum, with Cornwell dedicating the initial third of the novel to catching readers up on Kay's professional and personal life。 While longtime series fans may appreciate these updates, first-time readers might find the opening a bit slow。 However, the beginning's political intrigue and personal challenges soon lead to a mystery that taps into current events and paranoia that thoroughly hooked me。 In addition to the detailed exploration of the victims' causes of death, Cornwell introduces lingering uncertainties about the possible existence of a mythical creature at the crime scene。 Kay and Marino become entangled in a conspiracy that forces them and the readers to question everything they encounter。 This creates a suspenseful narrative that held my interest throughout。 Unnatural Death delivers all the elements I expect from Cornwell's series and lays the groundwork for even more compelling adventures in future books。 。。。more
